ROOSEVELTE ON THE ISSUE OF ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

A Multi-Industry State:

Arkansas boasts a diverse range of industries, including poultry, agriculture, and steel production. As your State Representative, I will recognize the importance of considering the environmental impact and benefits of initiatives across these sectors.

Expanding the Arkansas River System:

I support the expansion of the Arkansas River system, specifically the deepening of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System's channel, which exists right here in District 80. However, it is crucial to thoroughly understand the budgetary needs and environmental implications of such an effort. I will prioritize responsible decision-making that takes into account the potential impact on our environment and the long-term sustainability of our natural resources.

Improving Air Quality:

An expanded navigation system can contribute to improved air quality. By moving more cargo via barges instead of trucks and trains, we can reduce emissions and their impact on our environment. According to the Corps, barges produce significantly fewer emissions on a ton-per-mile basis compared to trucks and trains. Currently, the Arkansas River system moves approximately $5 billion worth of goods annually, which is equivalent to the load capacity of hundreds of thousands of trucks or railcars. As your State Representative, I will closely monitor these efforts to ensure they benefit our district's residents and promote sustainable commerce for the entire state.

Continual Monitoring:

It is essential to have ongoing monitoring and oversight of initiatives that impact our district and its residents. As your representative, I will stay informed about the progress, environmental implications, and economic benefits related to the expansion of the Arkansas River system. I will prioritize open communication, engaging with stakeholders, and making decisions that align with the best interests of our district and the state as a whole.
